SAN FRANCISCO – (January 14, 2009) While most retail businesses are suffering from a weak economy, San Francisco-based sex toy retailer Good Vibrations online store has been boasting a continuous revenue stream and a record number of new customers signing up on their site every day.

"What we find is that in times of economic stress, consumers turn to comfort items that they can enjoy in the privacy of their own homes - as a result, we often see an increase in sales when the world situation is challenging," notes Good Vibrations spokesperson and staff sexologist, Dr. Carol Queen.

Good Vibrations has noticed that in addition to strong general sales, there's also been a rise in safer sex supply sales. While the weak economy may deter consumers from spending money on a dinner out, an unnecessary trip or that new tech toy, they clearly still value pleasure and stress relief for themselves and their partners.

“Perhaps sex and pleasure are recession proof,” says Queen. “Condoms and lube sales have been very good the last two months. Sales of condoms are an indicator that more people are actually engaging in partnered sex.” Adds Queen, “We've seen increases in the more natural and organic items in our online store as well. This tells us that customers, now more than ever, are keeping an eye on being more green.”

While GV sees the same increased interest in some higher-end brands and products – as noted by the New York Times last week – it is clear that many consumers are looking for bargains and special deals. Before the recession, the trend seemed to be buying larger, more economical sizes of lube. Instead of shelling out more money for supplies that will last a while, the trend now has been more for the smaller sizes of lube; spending less in the present and holding on to more money for the future while still getting what they need.

Certain higher end niche items like some costly toys, wood toys and expensive glass toys have dropped in sales. Says Dr. Queen, “We have seen a large increase in the less expensive, colorfully and neatly packaged ‘convenience’ toys. These deliver a lot of fun and pleasure without costing a fortune.”

One exception, according to the company, is that the high-end JimmyJane and Lelo brand products have sold remarkably well and increased in sales in the last two months. These luxury products range between $90.00 and $170.00. So, while people are being budget conscious, many are not willing to sacrifice quality if they are going to purchase a toy for themselves or partners. Perhaps the long term perception and value of pleasure seems like an economically fit decision to make.

In light of the recession, Good Vibrations is offering a “Stimulus Package” promotion – a selection of products bundled and priced at over 30% off. Promotion begins January 19th and runs through February 28th. Visit www.goodvibes.com for more information.
