Dr. Betty L. Sullivan Joins Good Vibrations as Director of  Special Programs and Content

SAN FRANCISCO (March 1, 2007): Internationally known media educator and San Francisco-based LGBT community leader, Dr. Betty L. Sullivan, has joined the staff of Good Vibrations in a newly created position, Director of  Special Programs and Content.

“As we prepare to celebrate our 30th anniversary year, we are honored to have Dr. Betty Sullivan joining the Good Vibrations family,” said Good Vibrations' president and CEO Theresa Sparks. “Betty will lead us as our company expands its online and new media services and programs. She will have a key role in developing content for the Good Vibrations magazine, our web site (www.goodvibes.com) and new media projects, such as GVTV, our online video program and other web-based lifestyle resources.”

Additionally, Sullivan will work with members of the Good Vibrations executive staff, board members including Margaret Cho, and affiliated experts, including the company's staff sexologist and Chief Cultural Officer Dr. Carol Queen.

“The mission and values of Good Vibrations - fostering a healthy and responsible sex-positive community with open and safe access to educational resources - is completely in sync with the rationale of my work here in the Bay Area for the past dozen years,” Sullivan said.

Previously, Sullivan has developed special projects using media in education and outreach for The New York Times, USA Today, White House Offices of Special Advisors to the President, United States Olympic Committee, PBS, Children's Television Workshop, CNN Newsroom, Walt Disney on Ice, Ringling Bros and numerous others. She has served as a speaker and workshop-leader addressing media and education for Harvard and Columbia Universities, the United Nations, the World Association of Newspapers, American Society of Newspaper Editors, Poynter Institute on Media Studies and other media-related groups.

In the Bay Area, she is best known for founding Sullivan Communications, Inc and its popular “Betty's List” online (www.bettyslist.com) and e-mail information service for the LGBT Community, reaching 10,000 - 15,000 contacts daily.

“Betty's List will continue to grow and expand,” Sullivan said,” as a separate, independent business. Good Vibrations may explore business opportunities with Betty's List, including the possibility of creating similar services in other cities as stores open in other markets. Our various e-mail, mailing and customer lists will remain protected as separately and safely held independent databases by each organization,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan has received numerous awards for her work in the LGBT community and was the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Alumnae Award from Columbia University in New York. She served on the national board of P-FLAG (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays), and has been an officer of local LGBT non-profits.

During her years in Washington DC, she served as a member of the National Coalition for Literacy during the administrations of Presidents George H. Bush and Bill Clinton, and worked on First Amendment Education projects with colleagues at the Newspaper Association of America Foundation and The Freedom Forum.

Currently, she is a member of the Golden Gate Performing Arts Board of Directors, overseeing the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and the GLAM Youth Choir. She has worked on staff for the Lesbian Health & Research Center at UCSF and as a consultant to the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women's Health and the Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. She is a volunteer for Lyon Martin Women's Health Services.

Additionally, through Betty's List and its partners, Sullivan conducts projects such MECCA Ladies Night, Nordstrom Fashion Shows, Olivia cruise groups, Smart Women Business Network, Ladies Go Biking and a recently launched book club.
