Top Toys for Kegel Exercise

When we think about our physical health, we often think about getting and keeping our muscles in shape through working out- and while arm day and leg day are essential parts of a good fitness routine, getting in a workout for your vag can be just as important - especially when it comes to stronger Os.

What Is The Pelvic Floor?

To know about kegels, you first need to know about the pelvic floor. It’s a series of muscles that you can think of almost like a hammock that cradles and supports important organs like the uterus, bladder, and bowels - they’re essential to control of bodily functions like urination, preventing incontinence, protecting all of those organs, providing strength to our core, and yes - orgasms.

Having strong pelvic floor muscles provides increased blood flow to the pelvic area which helps with arousal, and stronger muscles = stronger contractions which can make orgasms feel bigger or more full bodied, and even help with ejaculation / squirting. Staff Sexologist Carol Queen, PhD notes that the health of our pelvic floor can be central to our orgasmic potential: “If [the pelvic floor muscles] are too weak or too tight, this can have effects on our sexual functioning—especially for those of us with vaginas, but really everyone,” she says. “These muscles pulse when we come, and if they don’t pulse very hard, the contractions of orgasm aren’t very pronounced.”

What Are Kegels?

Kegels, kegel exercises, or PC muscle exercises are movements that contract and relax the pelvic floor muscles to help strengthen them. One of the more common ways that people find these muscles is through stopping yourself while urinating - the muscles you’re engaging to stop the flow are the muscles we’re looking to target with these exercises.

But before you get started - just like you should before starting any workout routine - you should talk to your doctor or OBGYN. If you have conditions like endometriosis or vaginismus, you may need to go about training this area in a different way to make sure that you don’t cause unwanted tightness that can lead to discomfort or pain.

You can do kegel exercises on your own, concentrating on the tension and release just with our own bodies, or you can use kegel toys and tools like the ones we recommend below - kinda like working out with or without weights or equipment, both will get the job done, but using toys and tools can help (and some even double as pleasure toys - win/win!)

Just remember as you get started on your kegel quest - go SLOW, take your time, and listen to your body. Allow yourself time and space to warm up, and don’t forget that the exercise is about contracting AND relaxing, not just seeing how long and hard you can keep those muscles tight - the relaxation is just as important, you don’t want to cramp up or make your muscles too tight where they can cause discomfort or pain (especially for penetrative play).

Important safety note: The following picks are toys for vaginal kegel training - unless noted, these toys are NOT for anal use and should only be used vaginally. Remember, nothing should enter the back door without a flared base.
